Portland Oregon: The New York City of the West

Most people assume that Los Angeles is the West Coast's counterpart to New York City but I am here to posit that Portland is the real New York City of the West Coast. Sure Portland is smaller and sure Portland is not as ethnically diverse, but I would still say that Portland is the "it" city on the West Coast. Here is why:

1. New Yorkers love Portland. The New York Times in particular loves to talk about the advances Portland is making in just about every area.

2. The Arts and Culture scene in Portland is thriving. The Pearl District of Portland is known as the arts district. What used to be a bunch of old and abandoned warehouses are now new and thriving art galleries. These galleries show local artists. What's more, there are a ton of arts festivals in Portland. Every Saturday there is an arts and crafts fair down town, close to Chinatown and North East Portland sees pretty much every traveling arts festival there is. Everything from performance art to knitting and scrap booking are celebrated here!

3. More movies are being filmed and edited here every month. The uber popular film Coraline was made in a Portland studio. Portland studios also helped film the film adaptation of Twilight (the book series takes place not far from Portland). Goonies was filmed a couple of hours away in Astoria.

4. The Public Transportation System in Portland is far superior to the transit systems in Los Angeles and some say its ease of use rivals New York. It is true that Portland does not yet have a Subway system. It is also true that Portland does have an intricate system of trains, busses and streetcars that take residents all over the city for a very affordable price. Transit passes work on all three forms of transit. Downtown Portland is known as "fareless square" and anybody can hop on a bus, train or streetcar to travel anywhere else in downtown for free! A day long transit pass costs less than five dollars and works on all of the major forms of transit.

5. The Library System. The Portland Oregon library system is one of the best in the country. The system includes five county library systems and residents living within those five counties get free access to all of the libraries in the system for free. The main library: Multnomah County Library in downtown Portland is three stories tall and takes up an entire city block!

6. Hidden gems. Everyone knows that New York is full of "locals only" hidden places. Portland is the same way. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and fun things to see and do that you will only find out about via word of mouth.

7. Nature! New York might have Central Park, but Portland has a state forest, a state park and a dormant volcano within its city limits—all of which can be explored for free!

Portland is one of the premiere destinations on the West Coast and one of the greatest cities in the United States!

Let's face it, individuals really don't truly like washing their windows. It's a single one of individuals chores that many procrastinate about until the windows become filthy beyond recognition.
